PineTar Threatens Suit; Pisces to Relocate

PORTLAND - Facing a threatened injunction, the FOFL league offices have decided to honor former Portland Pisces owner PineTar's wish to have the team renamed and relocated.

Despite an unexpected league title and a number of playoff appearances, the Portland Pisces existence in the FOFL has been a rocky one. Founded in 2003 by PineTar, owner of the city's FOBL entrant the Fighting Prawns, the Pisces were sold the following year; PineTar cited philosophical differences at the time of the sale. The new owner - the brash, abrasive Shawn Wignall - moved the team to "Wigport" in 2005. Wignall soon ran afoul with the FOFL establishment however, and was expelled from the league. PineTar and the FOFL mended their differences as the team returned to Portland for the 2006 season.

Thus started the golden age of football in Portland. The team won it's first NC East division title in 2008, and repeated in 2009 and 2010. The team made playoff appearances in seven of the eight seasons between 2008 and 2015, before stumbling to a 4-12 record in 2016. The team rebounded and narrowly missed the playoffs the following year, but PineTar had made the decision once again to sell the team.

In the years since the sale the team entered a state of neglect, going through two more owners before being abandoned after the 2025 season. Despite this mistreatment, the Pisces won the league title in 2023 - but it was an empty victory. The relationship between the city and the team had soured, and the enthusiasm initially felt in 2003 wasn't coming back.

PineTar and the Portland Fighting Prawns contacted the league last week requesting the relocation of the Pisces. "Continued operation of the Pisces would serve to blemish Mr. Tar's legacy, the Fighting Prawns brand, and the city of Portland", read the letter. "We respectfully request that the league relocate the Portland franchise. If it fails to do so, we reserve the right to take legal action against the league."

The FOFL has decided to honor PineTar's request, it issued in a statement released today. The team will play its games to the south in Agate Point, WA as the "Blanks" while the league continues to search for long-term ownership solutions.

Actually though, with a name like the "Blanks" I should have used something from Match Game. Ah well.
