    Default My 2059 All-FOBL Team

    Usual disclaimers:
    - Subject to my own biases, most notably that I like high IP on my pitchers
    - DH is not limited to DH, but simply the best hitter not yet chosen for the team
    - After the teams are (total lifetime 1st teams-2nd teams-3rd teams-total lifetime appearances)

    1st Team
    C: Mat McQuarrie, MON (1-0-0-1)
    1B: Callum Jones, NRM (1-0-0-1)
    2B: Jonathan Pena, ORO (1-0-0-1)
    3B: Don Jones, VIR (10-1-2-13)
    SS: Vic Payne, KEN (5-0-2-7)
    LF: Johnny D'Urso, KEN (2-0-0-2)
    CF: Ron Belew, AYR (1-0-0-1)
    RF: T.J. Crater, LAS (10-0-0-10)
    DH: Liam Hahn, WIC (1-0-0-1)
    SP: Jamie Straub, MON (3-1-0-4)
    SP: Gene McClendon, MBJ (11-4-1-16)
    SP: Curt Ford, KEN (1-1-2-4)
    RP: Jamie Sutton, LAS (4-0-1-5)

    2nd Team
    C: Tom Caldwell, TRE (1-1-0-2)
    1B: Nate Bernard, DUR (0-1-0-1)
    2B: Tom Danielsen, FRS (0-1-1-2)
    3B: Robbie MacDonell, AYR (2-5-0-7)
    SS: Tom Chamberlin, TRI (0-1-0-1)
LF: Pat Van Ness, MIN (0-1-0-1)
    CF: Shooter McGavin, NRW (1-1-1-3)
    RF: Pat Colston, DUR (1-2-1-4)
    DH: Jonathon Rogers, POU (0-1-0-1)
    SP: Milt Devine, CAP (0-1-0-1)
    SP: Milt Gahagan, AYR (1-1-0-2)
    SP: Julian Diaz, MBJ (3-5-5-13)
    RP: Jimmy Shelton, MIN (0-1-1-2)

    3rd Team
    C: Tom Wright, VIR (0-0-2-2)
    1B: Vince Tellez, WIC (2-2-2-6)
    2B: Victor Garza, MIN (1-1-2-4)
    3B: Fabian Green, TRE (0-0-1-1)
    SS: Pat Boozer, GRN (0-0-1-1)
    LF: Tom McCulley, MBJ (1-0-2-3)
    CF: Manuel Hurtado, CHI (0-0-1-1)
    RF: Dave Cuny, BRE (0-0-1-1)
    DH: Griff Gaywood, GRN (5-1-3-9)
    SP: Josh Jordan, WIS (3-1-1-5)
    SP: Zach Jennings, NRT (0-2-2-4)
    SP: Ricardo Sims, BOS (1-1-1-3)
    RP: Vladimir O'Flanagan, LAS (0-2-1-3)

    - So McClendon, at the above record, is finally the one to catch Happy Rivera (who finished at 11-1-0-12). Given his ludicrous postseason efforts, I'm comfortable with his designation as greatest pitcher ever (as if he needed my affirmation). I'd still rate Len Hayes (13-0-2-15) the best player ever, but it's not a bad argument between the two, and McClendon may still have more in the tank!
    - And don't sleep on Crater, who shows no signs of slowing down. Props also to Don Jones for reaching the very rarified air of 10 1st teams:
    Hayes: 13
    McClendon, Rivera: 11
    Jones, Crater: 10

    Bah, stupid 1B zone rating!

(I don't know if that's why Tellez was ahead of Lehman, but I assume that factored into it somewhat.)

It was hair-trigger close between the two. Zone rating is a fairly minor part of my calculation for 1B, but given how close the race between the two was (6.3 vs 6.2 WAR, 126.3 vs. 125.2 RC, etc.), it probably did put Tellez over the top.

That's actually one of the reasons that I put more emphasis on 1st teams than on total appearances when I think about players all-time. The difference between 3rd team and the 4th/5th place finishers is often razor-thin, while the 1st team guys tend to be blowouts most of the time. For example, this year only C, the last SP (Ford) and I guess maybe DH were close calls at all on the 1st team. Well more than half of the 3rd team were close calls.

Woot! Even after a semi-crappy year, it's nice to see DUR getting a couple folks on the team, especially Bernard, which is hopefully the beginning of a long career for him.
