Default 2057 Draft Discussion - Draft ON

This year we will be using the VPI draft utility to conduct the draft.

The utility is stocked with the players and correct draft order. If you notice any errors, please let us know or transfer the picks yourself within the util.

The clock for the 2057 FOBL Draft will turn on Wednesday, Sept 30th at 9AM Eastern. Owners may exercise their picks before the official draft start.

    The Draft Clock

Based on the round in question each team shall have a maximum window in which to make their pick using the draft utility.

    Round 1: 4 hours
    Round 2: 3 hours
    Rounds 3: 2 hours
    Rounds 4-5: 1 hour

The draft window will run from 9 AM EST to midnight EST. (time spent on the clock outside of these hours will not count against the allotment).

IMPORTANT: The VPI clock has to be monitored and otto'd MANUALLY. So, if someone is over their time give one of the BoG or Draft Czar Doc a heads up. BPA may also be a little wonky, but you are encouraged to use it nonetheless (admin will check for this before making a pick). You are also advised to TURN ON EMAIL UPDATES to alert you when your pick is up.

The usual draft class page is stocked: http://www.thefobl.com/draft/draftclass.php.

Salt Lake City is up with the #1 pick.

Now that I have a full season in, is it possible that we can get the draft utility and other areas of the site to show my actual team name rather than the Utica Wombats?

Heh, yeah - sorry about that. I will work on getting that done.

(Well...probably not the home page, which is so outdated that Annawan is still on it.)

I will amend the EOY Finances script to reflect the deal. I'll transfer the picks if Doc doesn't get to it first.

Many thanks, Cuervo. I apologize for being a bit awol. I think the luster of the 24-138 Elders wore off after a while. I will do better. And thank heavens for the many web based capabilities this league has which allows me to look at things outside of the game. I will try not to take too long with the pick.

I hope no one will laugh at me too hard for the first overall pick of Johnny Rose. I have my own self to kick in the ass for not being prepared. But at least through the HTML ratings, he looked pretty nice.

I do have some questions that I didn't want to ask and use more time. In the fantastic draft room, what are the numbers in parenthesis beside every player's name?

Also, I thought it did, but I'll ask anyway - does a player's loyalty rating ever come into play in FOBL? Maybe for free agency? Or unhappiness? Does it affect their play?

The numbers: these are used mostly for cases where we have to OTTO a pick or determine a "Best ___". It's taken from the csv dump and represents the game's perceived value of the player (which is sometimes off, mind you).

Loyalty: yes, this plays into the discounts owners get when bringing back an RFA. It is calculated as 2% reduction per OOTP loyalty point (2-20%, total). I forget offhand what the exact ranges are as far as low/normal/high go. I don't think it affects gameplay or happiness.

My $0.02: I would completely ignore the loyalty player rating except as a tie-breaker between two players with identical ratings everywhere else (including the much more important 'Work Ethic' rating).

I don't think many of us will be laughing at you for that pick. He clearly was one of the top prospects in the draft-though thanks to development, he may look different (perhaps vastly if you are a team like mine that gets cursed when it comes to dev.) As for POU's pick, I successfully avoided the "CL that should be a SP" pick with Sid Felix, who just seemed tailor made for POU. But will I get a Sean Combs or just a very good reliever? Too much of a risk for 1(3)

So I went for the "safe" pick of C Pappas. Been trying for a long time to get an elite catcher, or at least starting quality in the FOBL. Got one last season in the draft, but he's one dev hit away from disaster. Pappas is much better and hopefuly will be the Paladins starting catcher for years to come.

I think that is what I was opting for - the "safe" pick at #1. I am praying that Rose won't take a dev hit, and was aware that he was not an 18 year old baby, but a 22 year old. That actually is what made Rose attractive - that maybe he won't have as much variance as an 18 year old? Maybe that's foolish thinking. I also figured that an age difference of 18 to 22 is not that huge; if he is any good, he'll be in the big leagues soon enough, especially for the Salt Lake Shit Show.

Oh,sorry about that. Work has been hell and I haven't been checking in very regularly. Please keep me on the OTTO list, although I will try my best to keep the utility stocked.

There's a clock and owners are entitled to it - no need to apologize for that. I think drafts generally go too fast anyway.

This was really helpful as I looked back when I had more time and in preparation of my second pick. Sometimes the number in the parenthesis make sense. But once in a while, it sort of leaves me baffled. One (of many) questions that dawns on me is, can the potential ratings change eventually? If not, some of the potential draftees look like they could aspire to be Quadruple A guys, but I'm not sure about big league contributors.

Oh, these guys will change a ton. Don't get too attached to them.

With the values, things like speed and fielding definitely factor into it, and I'm not sure they're not overweighted compared to offense. I also don't know if the game adjusts for handedness.

You guys have had decades of FOBL baseball seasons to adjust to this! This is going to take me a while...because I plan very much to get attached to my fake baseball players!

Oh, don't do that. That is the surest way to lose interest. Take it from me. Unless you're BuddyG or DocP, 99% of your draftees will die.

Managing your cash is the most important part of FOBL.
