Default League Pulse: Removing Contract Restrictions, Abolishing Franchise Tag

I want to hear folks weigh in with pros and cons on this. It has worked fine in the leading leagues, and want to see if there are reservations to having it carried over here.

Also, how is the franchise restriction handled with AI clubs? Or semi-owned clubs that are often on AI control?

I am not for abolishing the Franchise tag this offseason because my roster planning took its availability into account. Next offseason, sure.

Contract restrictions seem to be unnecessary at this point. It's just optics really - are you okay with a player getting a 1 year deal? If so, then it's fine.

Renegs are fixed too, and I think it would be fine to lift the "only in last year" restriction.

Ben would be the best one to ask about franchise tag.

100% in favor of this change with the caveat that the no franchise thing doesn't go into effect until next season

Franchise tag would be usable this season, yes.

if we lift the rules, will we end up with a bunch of guys on 1-year FA deals?

Not with the franchise tag gone.

And cuerv, to answer your question, I just let the AI teams do whatever. It's not like they're signing anyone to one-year deals other than the really old guys anyway...

I still feel like it will be a thing - we have so much cash out there folks will be able to massively overpay for 1-year rentals. They wont be able to lock them up long term...but I think it's still going to happen

It hasn't happened en masse in the 8-10 offseasons in the other leagues I am in that have done it. We have only seen big one year contract the old players. And really, that is much better than the current system of people like me figuring out a way to structure a contract in a goofy manner that gets around the three-year rule.

Here are some details and hard numbers:

    http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/...39#post2990639

    The tl;dr version:
    • After six seasons in the FOOL with the restrictions removed, roughly 90% of 50/50 or better players are signing multi-year deals.
    • The most common contract is still the three-year deal.
    • The 50/50 guys getting one-year deals are all older guys.
    • Well over half of the 10ish% of 50/50 or better guys who have signed one-year deals got either no other offers or only one-year offers.

One thing to keep in mind if we do this is that the tag change really needs one *full* offseason's notice, but the no-three-year rule can be enacted in the offseason prior. Because we're already into the 2050 offseason, we are making cap decisions at this point assuming that we'll be able to tag players next year. For example, my OG Austin Lehr is in the final year of his rookie contract and is asking for an extension that would cost me around $10M more this season than what I'm paying him. Because the tag is an option here, my plan is to use that $10M elsewhere this year and tag him next year. I'm sure there are others making similar decisions now.

In other words, get rid of the FA rules for this FA, but keep the tag for 2051? If we do that I think we need to do it with the stipulation that you can only use the tag on players currently on your roster.

Oh. I was assuming that since we are already in FA (people have exported) we would have to keep the three-year rule this offseason. (I know I would have done some renegs differently if I thought we could change it this year.) But yeah, if you're going to change midstream, I guess that would work.

Nah, you're probably right on that front. I haven't announced anything so everyone should be going off the assumption that the rules are the same.

But franchise tag/no rules for 2051, both gone for 2052?

Seems like that would work for most everyone who has weighed in. I would double-check with DD, though.

I am fine with the changes. Truthfully, I'm not convinced we need to axe the franchise tag (and yes, I know that flies in the face of my comments above). No matter what, I think it will improve on the current system.
