Default Official 2050 Hall of Fame Discussion: Antonio Gomez

    Antonio Gomez

    .306/.359/.450, 3167 hits, 1246 RBI, 1621 runs.

Gomez was a gun for hire, debuting in 2027 with Honolulu, and going on to have 9 different stops with 8 different franchises. From 2029 through 2041, he was a consistently solid outfield bat with a solid glove (5 gold gloves), and he had a few contributing seasons even after his prime. For this long career, his hit total finished 18th all time, and his run total 43rd.

I'm on the fence, but I think he's just very good, not great.

As I mentioned in the Castillo post, I'm a "peak" voter, as opposed to a "career" voter, but I want to make the case for Gomez, even if I don't end up voting for him.

    - His career totals, noted in the first post, are very strong. I suspect most don't remember him because he spent his best years on teams that don't particularly hype their players.
    - Despite a quality bat, he never put up the power or showed the patience to be an elite hitter, and he didn't play a premium position either. But he did bring something else to the table: Gomez was an elite defensive corner outfielder, as shown in both his stats and his multiple gold gloves.
    - Again referencing the Castillo post, careers are simply shorter now on the average than they used to be. That Gomez finished as high in the career rankings as he did is actually more impressively than you'd initially think, because most of those ahead of him played in a version of OOTP that was much kinder to players in their 30s.

Like I said, I don't know if I'll vote for him or not, but I hope that he gets a long look from everyone. He deserves at least that.

    I voted for Gomez.

While I think peaks are extremely important, I think we are starting to see that longevity of very good play is going to be a rarer occurrence. He was good on the base paths and in the field as well.

This was a tough choice for me & I would understand if it was difficult for others as well. Corner OF's and 1B really have to really wow us with performance because so many of our past hitting stars played those positions. That said, I voted for him too, just for being an impact player for so damn long (almost 20 seasons). He is a counting stats candidate with 3000+ hits & 500+ SB's, but he was pretty effective for most of his career, as shown by those lifetime BA/OBP/OPS numbers (.306/.359/.810).

The 3000 hits tipped it for me.

    Yes yes.
