    Default 2045 Free Agency Wrap-Up

This was written before Training Camp, so it doesn't reflect anything that happened there. Also possible I missed someone, so let me know on that end.

    1. WR Ernie Battle

    New Team: Charleston
    Old Team: Norwich
    Terms: $138M/3 years ($108M Bonus)
    Experience: 9th year

Battle is a star wide receiver in free agency, so naturally, he got paid and paid well. GIven FOFL economics, this is fairly unlikely to backfire on Charleston, unless he takes an immediate post-training camp ratings hit. At Battle's age, that is possible, but he likely will still be very valuable for most of his contract. Strong add to a strong team.

    2. QB Randy Richert

    New Team: Jupiter
    Old Team: Austin
    Terms: $100M/3 years ($10M Bonus)
    Experience: 14th year

The other gem of free agency is long-time FOFL star Randy "Ace" Richert. He's older than Battle, and could retire at any time. Unlike Battle, Austin got in with a fairly low bonus, so the team can bail if the contract starts to look ugly with little downside. Austin was miserable offensively last year, and this will be a good test of what a big free agent pickup can do.

    3. QB Todd Pineda

    New Team: Chesapeake
    Old Team: Chesapeake
    Terms: $75M/3 years ($39M Bonus)
    Experience: 12th year

May have been overshadowed by Richert's presence on the market. Normally I don't love when teams resign their own free agents (rather than extending them the previous year), but this may actually have been a good thing for Chesapeake, as Pineda should be OK through this contract, and the Chili Dog train will keep rolling.

    4. DE Shane Hudson

    New Team: Alabama
    Old Team: Norwich
    Terms: $55.47M/3 years ($12.84M Bonus)
    Experience: 10th year

Hudson was probably the best defensive player on the market, with good ratings all around. Alabama may have gotten a slight discount, as Hudson's initial 2-year deal was voided, and teams may not have noticed him drifting back into the market. Even if he declines on Alabama, should be a good deal.

    5. DE Terrell Noyes

    New Team: Buffalo
    Old Team: Alabama
    Terms: $42M/3 years ($20M Bonus)
    Experience: 4th year

The second of Alabama's new ends, Noyes isn't as talented as Hudson, but is much younger. This is a fairly high price for an okay player, but given Alabama's need at the position, it could pay off.

    6. C Mitchell McIntyre

    New Team: Chesapeake
    Old Team: Chesapeake
    Terms: $39M/3 years ($30M Bonus)
    Experience: 5th year

Unlike Pineda, not extending McIntyre last season probably cost Chesapeake some real money. This, also, is a fairly hefty price for an okay player.

    7. DE Morris Dunlap

    New Team: Jupiter
    Old Team: Jupiter
    Terms: $36M/3 years ($12M Bonus)
    Experience: 7th year

Dunlap is a pure pass rush specialist, who has been fairly consistent throughout his career. Hard to judge this contract without knowing what he wanted for an extension.

    8. DT Nicky Middleton

    New Team: French
    Old Team: Coney Island
    Terms: $36M/3 years ($4M Bonus)
    Experience: 12th year

I love this contract. Middleton is one of FOFL's most decorated defensive tackles, and probably a future HOFer. He is still one of the 10-15 best defensive tackles in the league. And there is only 4 million in bonus on this contract, so French is protected for age-related decline or retirement. Big win for the Ticklers.

    9. OLB Burt Johnson

    New Team: French
    Old Team: Washington
    Terms: $33M/3 years ($9M Bonus)
    Experience: 7th year

Johnson is a fairly solid player with good secondary traits, and a former 4th rounder made good. French was already a solid teams, but the really bad a nice offseason.

    10. RB Paul Coles

    New Team: White Rock
    Old Team: Breizh
    Terms: $31.13M/3 years ($10.86M Bonus)
    Experience: 7th year

Coles was one of two feature running backs on the market this season. He lacks big play ability, but should be a very consistent runner.

    11. T Oliver Cook

    New Team: Jupiter
    Old Team: Jupiter
    Terms: $27.5M/3 years ($18M Bonus)
    Experience: 7th year

Solid league-average OT, decent price. Nothing to see here.

    12. S Kyle Colombo

    New Team: Jupiter
    Old Team: Jupiter
    Terms: $25.5M/3 years ($3M Bonus)
    Experience: 13th year

Colombo is still one of FOFL's best safeties. This contract turned out very well for Jupiter, as they are protected against any age issues, while still having a strong player at a decent price.

    13. QB Christian Carter

    New Team: French
    Old Team: French
    Terms: $25.09M/3 years ($4.65M Bonus)
    Experience: 17th year

Obviously, French didn't want this future HOFer going anywhere else, and, unless Carter hangs around, it won't cost the team very much. No impact on the field, though.

    14. OLB Jim Deisig

    New Team: Myrtle Beach
    Old Team: Buffalo
    Terms: $25M/5 years ($5M Bonus)
    Experience: 6th year

Not sure I get this one, as Deisig is no more than a backup. Obviously, he can be cut without too much damage, but I don't see the upside in this signing.

    15. S Ivan Vendl

    New Team: Jupiter
    Old Team: Jupiter
    Terms: $24M/3 years ($9M Bonus)
    Experience: 7th year

One more Jupiter resign. Vendl is another average-ish player, who may be overpaid, but not ridiculously so.

Too much for a 7th year PRT specialist.

Perhaps, but since we pretty much never have cap issues, I can't say I've ever had any concerns about paying anyone too much...

It's a weird situation in FOFL, because cap issues basically seem to boil down to your ability to go after the occasional mega-star that hits FA with a 50M/year contract.

With that said, I'm trying to invoke more self-discipline myself on the mid-range players, since you see dozens go every year at or near minsal in FA.

I ran into cap problems a season or two ago when I forgot about the "no reneg except in final years" thing.

Yeah, you really have to watch contracts that balloon in the second-to-last season in FOFL. There's no way out of those other than releasing people.

Which is why I tend to avoid balloon contracts...

Interesting ratings curve on Dunlap, FWIW. Looked like a bus
T after a year but then came back nicely. It looks like there may have been a VSOD (mitigated by what should have been a good camp?), but that first offseason drop as well (unless that's a Jim mechanism to try to downplay a usually initial good camp)

RB Coles wouldn't sign a new contract with me anyway, so I had no other choice since I tagged QB McKenzie. I think I got a nice consolation prize with 63/63 rated RB Ike Bunyan
