Default Get rid of draft pick trading restriction?

Do we really still need the restriction on trading next draft's picks until after the All-Star Break? If we opened up next draft's picks for trade, we might encourage more trading.

I propose amending Article 6, Section B(1) from:

    1. Prior to the All-Star break of a given season, only the draft picks of the upcoming draft are available for trading by an owner. After the in-game All-Star break has passed, but before the upcoming draft is completed, draft picks of both the upcoming draft and the following year's draft are available for trading by an owner. Once the upcoming draft is completed, only the picks of the newly upcoming draft may be traded, until the upcoming All-Star break. At no time may an owner trade a draft pick from a draft occurring after the upcoming and following draft, i.e., two seasons away.
    to:

    1. Only the draft picks of the upcoming draft (or current draft, if a draft is in progress) and and the following year's draft are available for trading by an owner. At no time may an owner trade a draft pick from a draft occurring after the upcoming/current and following draft, i.e., two seasons away.
    Thoughts?

I see no reason to change this. All it would do is have the same teams who already trade just trade more with the other same teams they are already trading with. I'm not really interested in pumping up the circle jerk unless it induces new members to join in, and I doubt this would do it.

The concern about trading future draft picks, I believe, is that you run into a 1980s Cleveland Cavaliers situation, where an owner trades away all the future picks, then cripples the franchise for the next owner. The best argument for leaving it the way it is, is that most owners don't leave in the offseason, they lose interest after the season begins. So once we open up trading of picks at midseason, the people who are actually around to trade are likely to be there at least through the next offseason.

If we had a little more stable, active ownership (preferably with a ready group of vultures to take over franchises), I'd be all in favor of loosening restrictions, maybe even more than proposed here. But as it is now, I'm fairly concerned about the possibility of an owner trading away not just next year's picks, but the next year after that too, then flaking, and leaving behind a disaster area franchise, for which we'll have difficulty finding excited owners.

So you're basically just opening up the time between the end of the current draft and the upcoming All Star Break?

I don't see that this would make a big difference overall. That being said (lo siento, Sr Buddy), it would've helped a team like WIC, when they knew they had to sell off a draft pick, didn't have a current one to sell, and had to wait for that tiny All Star Break to Trade Deadline window.

I don't think this would have the disastrous effect that allowing trading 2 or 3 years in advance could have.

Don't feel terribly strongly about it, but if up for a vote, I'd probably say yes. I like less restrictions when it comes to this kind of stuff.

I do think in the end, Morg is probably right though. You'll probably still have the same guys trading with the same guys.

I think the positive aspects of opening up more avenues for trading outweigh possible negative aspects when trying to get new owners. Has anybody ever been turned off of being an owner by a bad franchise situation? Hell, we can't find new owners anyway. We keep recycling these old guys.

If somebody is going to blow up their franchise, hell, they can do it during that tiny window anyway.

Step 1: Install YD as caretaker owner
Step 2: Allow trading of three years of draft picks

    wonder how this ends
