Default Official 2044-2045 Hall of Fame Discussion: Carlos Bellido

    Carlos Bellido

    409 HR, 1475 RBI, .305/.388/.483

Bellido came into the league as a 25-year-old prospect in Los Alamos and terrorized league pitchers for the next fifteen years. Faded just a little in his next couple seasons, Bellido won a pair of rings as a core member of the Nukes, and he put up massive seasons in Utica's death-to-offense ballpark. He was the Silver Slugger and league MVP in 2036. He was a 10-time all-star, He won a batting title, led the league in hits twice, runs twice, total bases once. One of the more versatile players in the league's history, he stole over 50 bases five times.

3000 hits, .388 lifetime OBP (he was a master at getting plunked!) does help his case, even if the power numbers aren't *that* stellar for a 1B/DH type.

    I'm voting for him. FWIW.

That and his speed. 548 career steals for a 1B/DH who could thump like that makes him unique. I don't know where Nick hit him, but there were chunks of time where he hit in the lead-off slot for LOS.

As I recall, he was a prototypical La Russa-ish #2 hitter with UTI. Speed to burn, therefore could put extra bases on you just as quickly as he'd put one over the fence.

Just remember, a 10 WAR season in The Burrow is the equivalent of approximately an 80 WAR season in Wisconsin or Los Alamos.

Interesting career, because he didn't get started until age 25, and really wasn't any good until age 28. At that point, a HOF-candidate career seemed unlikely, but he took off. Though his numbers were gaudier in Los Alamos, Bellido was at his most effective in Utica. While he had good numbers on the basepaths, he was only slightly better than breakeven, and he was a complete zero in the field. For me, just barely under the in-mark, though I can see his case for sure; he needed to either be better with the glove or provide just a hair more offense. Really valuable player, though.

Looks like he is 21st in the all time 1B OPS list. Fantastic numbers but he's a good example why you need crazy stats to get in the HOF as a 1B. Lots more elite competition at 1B & in the OF. Bellido also had speed but OOTP has always been kind of wonky with SB stats, and his 66% lifetime SB success rate is well below the 75% rate that most statheads consider the SB benefit tipping point (in other words, his SB numbers likely hurt his teams more than helped them).
