Default Official 2043-2044 Hall of Fame Discussion: Robert Day

    Robert Day

    HR: 695, RBI: 1823, .861 OPS

Day is the prototypical mashing 1B/DH. He broke into the FOBL at age 24, and after a year or two to stabilize could be relied on for about 45 homers and 110 RBI over his next fifteen seasons. With the exception of 166 AB in Virginia, Day spent his entire season in Durham. FOr a guy with nearly 700 homers, Day was oft overlooked, being named an All-Star only twice per the record book.

That many HR and that decent an OBP (and essentially a one team guy) - with a 130+ OPS+ - has me thinking yes.

I haven't been voting because I don't feel comfortable enough saying I understand the context of the era and stats, but with a guy like this, my question is how he placed among his peers; AKA where would he rank among 1Bs of the era? It's one reason I miss our old awards and all-FOBL teams.

Hey, voting on issues and people we don't fully understand is the American way! One of my favorite recent votes was city counsel in the tiny town I live in; there were like 10 candidates for 4 spots, and one of the 10 had pissed me off with annoying radio adds, so I voted for 4 random other people. Never heard of them in my life, but they weren't the guy I wanted to lose!+

Buddy posted the average offensive environments some time back, but yeah, it's hard to compare individuals vs. their peers. In the old days I worried more about the details of the Hall, but I've come to a better place with the FOBL environment overall. It's not about environmental perfection, it's about something that feels like baseball, but is more epic. So I vote more on base quality+story than raw HOF credentials these days. Of course, I'm not even sure I'm qualified to vote, but I do it anyway.

Offense rose in the 2016-2030 range, but has fallen since. Even during the 20s, though, offense was nowhere near as prevalent as it was in the first five or so seasons of the league.

To compare offensive peers, proxy it by doing a rundown of career counting records and compare career spans. Here's the very interesting HR career list: http://www.thefobl.com/news/html/his...eer_0_114.html

Stowers was bounced because all he had was the HR total in a major HR era. Schlemmer, Gibson, and Stewart may be locks. A few guys down the list are coming up, and may well be on the borderline.

Obviously I would vote yes (assuming I can slot the voting into my currently crazy life) - I ran him into the ground because I knew I could rely on him to put up 100+ walks every season without fail.

Resurrected for what will be considered a 4th ballot by the new standards for ballot inclusion.

Day is certain to be a polarizing candidate. He has solid career totals (especially his home runs). He was rarely a great player because he was a zero in the field, and his mediocre batting average kept his OBP from being outstanding. And though I don't know this, I suspect his numbers are a little inflated playing in Durham all those years. But there's also value in consistency, and for a staggering 15 seasons, he was good for a .250/.370/.500

I like Bellido better than him, and I'm probably (though not certainly) not voting for Bellido. But voters who love consistent long careers with big totals should give Day a long look.

Durham has been a neutral park (in terms of ratings) for as long as I can remember.

Ack, sorry. Don't know where I got it in my head that Durham was an extreme hitters park.

Oh, no worries. I kind of wish Day had managed to reach 700 HRs. Big round number might have made the difference.
