I've actually considered that as part of a proposal to eliminate purposeful tanking in FOBL. Basically having a separate FA pool of new entries into the league, where bad teams may decide to allocate their financial resources toward incoming youngsters rather than current players. Obviously, it would require a massive change to the financial system as well.

EDIT: It might be more intriguing in FOFL, where you don't have to worry about the complications of minor leagues and how far players are away from contributing.

This league won't even allow something as simple and universally accepted as a bye round in the playoffs. Good luck with all this hope and change you're spewing.

The 5x100K contracts have been one of the most skewed things about the league since the first draft class (hello Larry Goguen!) hit FOBL. It would require tremendous lead time, though, as such a proposal, even implemented modestly, would dramatically decrease the value of draft picks and prospects.

I enjoy the writer, I've been following his KC Royals blog for years & he used to share a Royals blog with Rob Neyer. Something needs to be done with the MLB draft for sure, but I don't think the story has any angles that apply to the FOBL. For the FOBL the only draft related issue is probably tanking (unless I'm missing something else?). We don't need to care about being fair to fake players, and unlike MLB, our draft actually does support parity due to no holdouts or signing bonuses. Additionally, we allow pick trades, which would actually solve some of the MLB draft issues.

Even though I like the author, the only advantage I see of his proposal for the MLB draft is that it would be more fair to young players. I think it might be considerably worse for MLB parity than what they have now though, unless the draft allowance money for the poor location teams was a significant amount more than the glamour locations.

    Buddy,

For FOBL: Yeah, the main basis for talking about it is to combat tanking, as well as addressing the greater issue of there being no reason to be mediocre in FOBL. It's basically always better, or at least no worse, to win 50-55 games than 75-80 (with a couple exceptions like when a sub-.500 team leaks into the playoffs). That's always seemed like one of fake sports biggest problems, because the counter-balance to that IRL is angry fans. We don't care, or have reason to care, about our angry fake fans.

This isn't to say eliminating the draft is a solution, or even a decent idea, just saying it could be part of a conversation.

For MLB: I've always thought the MLB draft is particularly heinous, even moreso than the other sports leagues. In the NFL/NBA, once you are drafted and sign your first contract, you are a member of the union (which screwed you in the CBA with the draft). As I recall, in MLB, you aren't a member of the union until you make the 40-man roster. Which means, just a handful of draftees, if any, are immediately union members and the vast majority of draftees will never be union members. It boggles my mind that the MLBPA is allowed to negotiate away the rights of people, the majority of whom are not even future union members.

    MLB draft picks aren't tradable.

I think we have kicked around the idea of bidding on these guys though (think of them as bonuses). Maybe allowed bonuses would be tradable.

I support it, mostly because you all have the mechanisms here to create a free-for-all system that actually works. I've tried no-draft situations in my fast-sim leagues in the past. It's worked in theory, but we never had a system like BWD to use or else, it'd have worked pretty damn well. Especially since we didn't have the robust money dealing for picks that you have here.

Where I think we'd have a problem is that there are so many guys. We'd still probably have to have a draft for all of them that didn't get bids.

Honestly, there are easier ways to deal with our issues. This is the kind of thing that would be fun for a new league looking for a hook (think the all-FA versions of MP FOF leagues). It's probably more appropriate for us to consider doing things with the draft order or with the finances than to outright eliminate the draft.
