    Default Playoffs Official Unofficial Poll

Compromising between my suggestion and Ryan's, here's a poll to see if we can get a grip on where the majority of our league wants our playoof future.

Morg's previous poll found the voters favoring 6 teams vs 8, by a 15-11 margin.
I'm guessing some of those 6-team voters would consider voting for 8 if byes were involved.
I agree with Ryan that # of teams is important, but I think we need to establish if there will be byes at the same time.
This poll should be able to hash that out.

If one of the above options recieves minimal votes, or there's obvious gridlock, we can try to release a new poll with only 2 options.

The last poll also saw 15 in favor of top 3 or 4 in the division vs 11 favoring not necessarily top 3 or 4. That can be determined after # of teams and bye are figured out.

This of course would still have to go through amendment voting or fiat, and wouldn't take place until next season at the earliest.

I'll leave this poll up through most of the offseason.

I'm new to the conversation, but I'm confused as to what an 8-team setup with byes would look like.

8 teams with byes would look like a play-in game or short series between 3 & 4 seeds, followed by 2nd round where 1st place finisher gets a bye.

It's been suggested that 1-5-7, 1-7-7, 3-5-7 formats could work.
It has been proven that there is no rust accumulated by bye teams in the newer versions of OOTP.

For the record I voted for status quo. My reasoning is as follows:

    1) I don't like the 8-team bye setup, as it feels overly complicated.
    2) While I generally would prefer fewer playoff teams, I would like to see discussion of this as part of a broader plan to encourage bad teams to actually try. Right now, there is no reason to try to go from 50 to 60 or from 60-70 wins other than pride. I fear that reducing the number of playoff teams with no other changes would eliminate the reason to go from 70-80 wins. I know it got to the point in the old, 4-team-per-league-playoff FOBL that even winning 90 games was a suckers' bet.

There's been quite a bit of discussion regarding the pros and cons of the status quo.

Since 2037, the draft classes have been so powerful, most marginal teams have been just as happy (or happier) getting a better draft pick than making transacations that would bolster their chances of making the playoffs.
There's also minimal incentive - almost ZERO - to finish in first place vs fourth place right now. The regular season is simply an overly long 1st playoff round that only eliminates half the teams.

Personally, I'd be ok with the 8 team structure if we incentivized finishing in 1st and 2nd place. An 8-team bye setup isn't complicated at all, especially for a bunch of smart guys like the FOBLers. At least that would add some drama and interest, which the last month of our current season has completely lacked (with apologies to IND and POU).

Could we perhaps do something as simple as changing cash payouts?

Yeah, if you can buy a bye.

Seriously, 15 owners voted for smaller playoffs in the last poll.

Cash is nice, but it doesn't address the sentiment for real change.

I was just going to write about this. What is the current payout now? For me personally I'd be more upset about the potential cash payout lost than I would be losing to a 4th seed. I mean look at my finances right now. If I win the SS I would be gaining about $4 mil in cash. Which would allow me to do more in FA. If I lose in the first round, I limit myself in FA and will have to look at selling all of my draft picks just to get back to where I was at the beginning of the season (about $12 mil).

Current payout is $200k - 4th, $400k - 3rd, $600k - 2nd, $800k - 1st. Then $1M for each series win ($23M total in payouts). The payouts under the old system were $1M for making it, then $1M for each series win ($15M total in payouts).

So previously, if you finished in 1st you were guaranteed $1M and a place in the final 8. Now, you are guaranteed only $800k and a place in the final 16, but if you do make it to the final 8 you have already pocketed $1.8M.

Once the playoofs roll around, maybe more owners will stop by here and drop a ballot in the box.

Otherwise, we can PM them, since the poll is public.

There are now unofficially officially enough votes to squash a constitutional amendment push for smaller playoffs.

And with more than 40% of voters favoring the status quo, there's no reason to think a fiat will occur.

I think now the focus needs to be on changing incentive structure (ie re-ordering draft picks, deferred bonuses, etc).

For the record again, I absolutely would support a smaller playoff pool, but only in tandem with other proposals to make sure it didn't do more harm than good. At least we have, what, 20 teams actually trying now? In the old system, we were lucky to have 15 (out of 36 at the time). In this league structure, I think 2 division winners + 2 wild cards would be fine, and I would even be OK with just the two division winners as long as we do something to disincent the notion that finishing 90-72 is a sucker's play.
