FWIW, I've always been more interested in my team when we are tanking than when we are winning. The only time I'm interested in my team when we're winning is when the playoffs roll around.
That said (sorry Buddy), I'm all for things that cause the league membership to be engaged. I'm just not sure how you legislate that though.

I think we should go with 7 teams per division making the playoffs with staggering byes so that everybody is giving a shit.

    1st round:
    6v7
    All others on by

    2nd round:
    5 vs winner

    3rd round:
    4 vs winner

    4th round
    3 vs winner

    5th round
    2 vs winner

    6th round
1 vs winner (They've had 5 byes with no rust and 2 months of Development to boot!)

Then the league championship and finally the Solecismic Series.

In this scenario, everybody has to give a shit.

Dola, I do actually agree with initial assessment that 3 teams per division would be ideal.

Even when Davenport was dominant, we had an interest in winning the division. The playoofs may be a crapshoot, but I want to load the dice as heavily in my favor as possible. So playing the #4 seed, who is presumably "worse" than the #3 seed, helps. And we'll take any edge we can get - I'd rather play the 82 win team than the 90 win team.

Not to mention it was fun watching for individual achievements like Vern-O's perfect game or Action Jackson stealing a fuckton of bases. *shurg* Everyone gets their fun out of it in their own ways.

If I'm honest I would almost always be inclined to be less inclusive rather than more when it comes to playoffs, but I do not agree that only the competing teams care about what goes on. For the most part there are three types of teams in the league. Teams that are competing, teams that are tanking, and the "middling teams" (as Morg would say it). The teams that are competing and tanking no doubt care about how their team is doing, whether it's winning or losing to get the first round pick, they all try to do whatever they can to get their desired result.

The Middling teams are the real question mark here. Do they tank and sell off their prospects or do they try to compete for the last playoff spot. I think if we go to a smaller playoff structure, what you do is remove the middling teams from the equation. Which in turn means more teams tanking. This result will eventually see a bigger disparity between the playoff teams and the non playoff teams as they will be selling off their goods to the highest bidder, which will be the playoff teams. I think this also will dilute the market on Free Agents since there will be tons of stars being passed around.

I guess my vote is dependent on what we are trying to accomplish. Are we trying to get more competition, are we trying to get more people to export, or are we trying to make the playoff structure easier for the top seeds? I would need to know that answer before actually making a decision, because I do not believe that we are going to accomplish the first two with a change in the playoff structure.

I was pro-playoffs during my last stint, especially after the contraction. Thought it was important for morale. But now? With seasons happening relatively regularly and you all engaged, to me, it seems like there's nothing worse -- as a division champ -- than losing on a fluke to a 4th seed. Seriously. I hate it. It's the fucking worst. I think an earlier proposal that said 4th teams still get money, but don't get into the game, to me, is fine. I am fine with rewarding teams with a bit of scratch for not tanking. I just think giving them a chance to upset the whole shebang isn't cool. And even when I was a 4th seed into the playoffs, I felt that way.

How about realignment into 2 leagues of 4 4-team divisions? Division winners and 2 wild cards make the playoffs?

    I'm always for small playoffs.

    BUT:

I wonder if there'd be any support for the 3rd and 4th seeds playing a 1 game playoff, with 1 and 2 getting the initial bye, and then #2 playing the winner of 3 vs 4. For those fearing "residual rust", a 1 game series wouldn't add too much to their fear.
This would incentivize 1st and 2nd place. Still leave 4 spots open.

I personally think a 1-game playoff sucks. But they do it in the real world now. And I don't think a 4 seed can really complain too much about losing this game, especially with so much sentiment against having a 4 seed to begin with.

This would suck for the #3 seeds, but in the end, even a powerhouse #1 seed couldn't complain too much about losing to a #4 that wins it's playoff game, and beats a #2.

I'd thought of what tramel said above, in a 3v4 3-game, winner vs 2 in a 5-game, then a divisional 7-game setup. That might be too long though, and certainly wouldn't be good for anyone who still fears rust.

I'm good with Cuervo's or Doc's suggestion. That would seem to tie both sides' concerns.

Can the powers that be put this up for a force vote, deciding between 4 teams vs 3?

Then once we have a winner there, we can discuss and vote on how the playoff rounds should be structured.

I'm good with whatever. I'll adapt to whatever the league decides. Although looking at this season, I'd say adapt poorly is probably the better phrase.
