    Default 2042 FOFL All-Rookie Team

I apologize in advance for any omissions. The website was quite a bit more useful than the in-game interface, but even it was far from perfect. Let me know if I missed anyone obvious!

    QB Bill Jacobs, BZH Drafted 6(25) 117/200, 1776 yards, 16 TD-2 INT

Maybe the toughest decision, along with the highest quality. Norwich's Nick Marshall played all 16 games with an incredible, for a rookie, 90.6 QBR. His one downside was a FOFL leading 14 fumbles. Jacobs, however, put up a ludicrous 110.3 QBR and 6-0 record as a starter. Despite less than half of the attempts of Marshall, and despite Marshall having a great rookie season, I had to give the nod to Jacobs.

RB Dan Dixon, VIL Drafted 1(24) 247/1213, 6 TD
    FB Marshall Hudson, KEE Drafted 5(32) 11 catches/95, 1 TD, 7 KRB/16 KRO
WR Cory Carrubba, SMT Drafted 1(5) 86/937, 5 TD
WR David Matson, CNI Drafted 4(2) 44/751, 2 TD

The second WR was a tough call, with Bar Harbor's Max Knight also being a strong candidate. In the end, I chose Matson's high yards per target (one of the best in the league this year) and lower drop rate, but you could flip a coin.

TE Byron Clark, TBY Undrafted 32/371, 1 TD

Edged out Dodge City's Quentin Schisselman, a major red zone contributor, by virtue of Clark's superior contribution to the TBY run game.

    T Eric Dixon, JER Drafted 1(19) 30 KRB/78 KRO, 2 sacks allowed
T Patrick Richiardi, NOR Drafted 1(2) 19 KRB, 49 KRO, 0 sacks allowed

Apologies to VIL's Stanley Winslett, who may have been the best rookie run blocker in the league this year, but I had to recognize Richiardi for his clean sheet in pass protection as a tackle.

G Raymond Strauser, VIL Drafted 1(29) 30 KRB, 80 KRO, 3 sacks allowed
G Marty Stanton, KEE Drafted 1(17) 29 KRB, 83 KRO, 6 sacks allowed
C Otis Smoker, PUN Drafted 1(30) 8 KRB, 13 KRO, 1 sack allowed

Not a single rookie starter at center this year.

    K Marco Carter, CHE Drafted 2(28) 37/43 FG, 47/47 XP, 158 points
    P Neil Coffey, DGC Undrafted 75 punts, 44.2 average, 37.4 net, 32 inside 20

There was nothing to separate Coffey from Tallahassee's Donnell Heusel or Austin's Doug Rewis, but I felt like Coffey had the better overall resume.

    DE Doug Bachman, SMT Drafted 2(6) 21 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 5.4 PR%
    DE Conrad Moss, DVS Drafted 2(20) 19 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 4.8 PR%
    DT Lorenzo Martin, JUP Drafted 4(23) 26 tackles, 3 sacks, 4.0 PR%, 3 FR
    DT Johnnie Page, BRH Drafted 2(15) 27 tackles, 2 sacks, 3.2 PR%
MLB Clyde Tibbetts, CNI Drafted 1(3) 76 tackles, 2 FF, 2 INT
    OLB Vernon Gunn, JUP Drafted 1(22) 45 tackles, 5 sacks, 6.1 PR%
OLB Steve Givens, HLC Drafted 1(9) 66 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 FF, 2 INT, 12 pass defenses
CB Floyd Lavan, APE Drafted 1(12) 64 tackles, 1 INT, 19 pass defenses
CB Riddick Sanderson, SMT Drafted 3(12) 24 tackles, 6 pass defenses, 3 FF

Slim pickings for second CB. I may have missed someone but I certainly don't see it.

S Pete Lindros, ROK Drafted 1(18) 88 tackles, 3 FF, 4 INT, 9 pass defenses
S Jake Kuehler, TAL Drafted 1(25) 54 tackles, 3 INT, 12 pass defenses

Went with Kuehler's pass coverage over Canton-McKinley's Bryce Cheramie, who was the better run defender/enforcer.

RET Alonzo Kovel, CLD Undrafted 49/795 KR, 13/147 PR, 1 TD

With no one standing out in the return game, I went with Kovel who had a touchdown, and regularly returned both punts and kicks.

Yeah, I probably need to carry over the changes I made to the career leaders page (breaking down stats by position, though even that can be better to reflect RB/FB/TE receiving) to the season leaders page.

Knight was not helped by our offense - we just don't pass that much (and he was our #2), so he had *50* fewer targets than Carrubba. So Carrubba racked up a lot of yards, but his performance really wasn't all that fantastic. Matson OTOH made the most of even fewer opportunities.

The primary weakness in Knight's case was the drops in a relatively low number of targets, but of course, that does cut the other way with Carrubba.

It's a fair complaint, and I think you can make a good case for any 2 of the 3. Knight just happened to be the odd man out.

Heh. As Fritz can attest, drops can be a PITA. So I'll give you that.

What I wonder about is to what extent drops may be some sort of a pressure valve for bad outcomes -- i.e. an incompletion has been determined, but not deemed being as a result of anything the defense has done, but also not the QB's fault, so it falls on the WR. FRE went from a drop pct of 6.90% in 2041 to 8.93% this season. Did his WR (Miller and Jamison especially) get worse, or revert to form? Or were they just unlucky and the drops were mostly noise?

It's a very good question; if drops in FOF would have been catches 100% of the time if not dropped, they are extremely costly. Any other way they are determined, might be more noise, and not actually very meaningful.

Ahh, Doug Bachman, the man I considered with my 1st round pick but passed on for Otis Smoker. Probably not the smartest choice!

Ah, another shortcoming in the site logic. It's tough to tell rookies sometime (you can't really rely on draft year either, because not everyone is drafted).

Looks that way. Nick Marshall isn't a rookie either.

Hmm..I missed that both of the "rookie" QBs were drafted a long time ago. What is the formal definition of "rookie" in football anyway? In baseball, someone who had never seen game action woudl be rookie, regardless of whether they'd been drafted last year or 10 years ago (see: Ichiro Suzuki, ROY). Don't know about basketball either: Is a Euro import with 6 years of experience in top European leagues a NBA rookie?

I did some searching and couldn't come up with a solid definition for what constitutes a rookie in the NFL. For example, Kurt Warner had only appeared in 1 game before his incredible first full year with the Rams and does not appear to have generated any rookie of the year buzz. Question is open as to whether he would have been eligible if he had been on the practice squad for that one game in 1998 that he played.

With all the confusion, we'll give QB Spencer Sutton, KEE (Drafted 4(28) 143/244, 1239 yards, 4 TD-6 INT) an honorary first team award. He also doubles as the only first year QB who got any real playing time.

http://images.nflplayers.com/mediaRe...Bookmarked.pdf Searchable copy of the CBA.

""Rookie" means a person who has never before signed a Player Contract with an NFL Club. The first Player Contract signed by such person is a "Rookie Contract.""
