Default Franchise All-Star Team - Volume 4: Montego Bay Red Stripe

Todays feature: The Montego Bay Red Stripe

In honor of the first SS title for Doc and his Jamaican posse, this next issue (OK, it's 7 months late) will detail the All-time All Stars of the Phildelphia Billy Clubs and current Montego Bay Red Stripe. By the way, that's some good drinkin', Red Stripe. FOBL housed Philly for 38 seasons before Cactus Junk Philly (aka Wayne Wright) relinquished ownership to the Doc (aka Mike Paris), and subsequently moved the team off the continent and into the Carribbean. ("Much better weather, mon," says Doc. "Philly's colllld. Like, only 80 degrees.") This is one of the more successful franchises, with 8 seasons of 100 or more wins, 17 playoff appearances and 3 SS titles. The current Red Stripe squad is as deep a franchise as any in the history of the league, so I won't be surprised if many of the below all-time franchise greats will be bumped ten seasons from now.

Overall Record (through end of 2044): 3824-3304

    Catcher Hector Herrera Seasons 2033-2037
    649 2290 660 177 16 58 327 314 240 18 0 23 320 0 1 .288 .357 .455 .813

A weak position for the Red Stripe overall, Herrera gets the nod by virtue of 2 All Stars and 3 Gold Gloves. Caleb Heaton might get some votes from his one season alone.

1st Baseman Estanis Tejada Seasons 2034-2040
    1080 4162 1093 158 14 203 734 609 393 957 28 15 .263 .782

Could have been Russ Weeks as well. But Tejada, who's been solid if unspectacular, wins on longevity, leading all Philly 1st sackers in At-Bats, Hits, Doubles, Home Runs, and RBI's.

2nd Baseman Jordan Oubre Seasons 2014-2021
    1265 5206 1533 320 75 68 539 859 358 420 204 98 .294 .765

So far, not a great beginning for the Clubs/Stripes. Oubre has by far the most at-bats in franchise history among 2nd baseman, but no all-stars, no Gold Gloves. He was a good run scorer (6 straight seasons over 100), and ranks 21st all time in triples. But other than Patrick Barham and his 2 seasons with Philly, no player really stands out. So Oubre gets it until the Stripes current crop overtakes him.

3rd Baseman Frankie Maestas Seasons 2015-2027
    1928 7408 2022 444 22 416 1482 1238 844 603 74 48 .273 .855

Now THIS is where the legends take up residence in Philly/Jamaica. Maestas is a HoF stud who averaged 35 homers, 125 RBI's in 13 seasons. Slugging % (.507) is in the Top 100 in FOBL history. Frankie has a slight edge over another Philly legend Vernon James (.921 OPS). And Ronald Goodall and his 3 seasons were no slouch, either (.979 OPS)

    Shortstop Robert Wiesner Seasons 2017-2023
    793 2926 876 193 12 62 427 495 445 250 5 2 .299 .829

This one was really tough. Wiesner had 6 very solid seasons with the 'Clubs in the late teens, which was a pitching dominated era. 2019 in particular was golden (.434/.486/.920). Robert nudges out HoF'er Angel McBride, who was a little better in a narrower time period, but had his best years with Milwaukee. A really good 1/2 punch.

    Left Field Seung-won YunSeasons 2030-2035
    795 3046 939 260 47 24 284 549 454 485 163 68 .308 .853

Yun was a Top 5 draft pick who won Rookie of the Year and made 3 All-Stars, the first during Philly's championship run of the early 30's. Hit .300 4 straight years and had a .400+ OBP 4 times as well. Eric Sedgwick and Gabriel Padilla get some votes here as well.

Center Field Hector Reyna Seasons 2032-2037
    732 2440 582 160 26 92 376 371 265 495 88 33 .238 .761

A lot of not much in Center Field. Reyna does at least have a Rookie of the Year award in 2032. Really, this position is ripe for the Red Stripe taking. Donnell Parker had a good season and a half, and Carmen Cavallo logged a lot of time here, although wasn't really good.

Right Field Kenneth Buckler Seasons 2031-2038
    900 3232 867 124 18 166 581 525 457 537 18 25 .268 .833

Buckler's prime seasons were with Greenbelt, but he continued to post very solid numbers after coming over to Philly and is the RF leader in almost all major statistical categories. 2 time All-Star as well. Raymond Horowitz also deserves some consideration, with a Philly OPS of .841 in 2021 at bats.

I won't publish a Designated Hitter straight up as most DH's are not listed as DH's in the game. It's a crime, though, that Hector Reyna is on the list and Vernon James is not, so James will earn the DH nod.

    Starting Pitchers Top 3

    Adrian Villegas Seasons 2032-2041
    238 238 128 67 0 3.33 1704.3 1491 685 630 176 404 1606 0 28 10 1.11

    Domingo Caudillo Seasons 2018-2031
    190 184 91 35 0 3.44 1084.7 1051 467 414 18 329 831 0 1 1 1.27

    Ricardo Vargas Seasons 2031-2033
    213 186 89 41 4 3.64 1229.7 1177 539 498 118 273 922 0 7 0 1.18

Philadelphia has always been a competitive team, but they've dominated in spurts. 2017-2021 was one of those times, and 2031-2037 was their high water mark. All of their best pitchers anchored those two periods. Villegas was the best, coming over via FA from Norwich in 2032 where he promptly won Philly an SS ring. 3 20 win seasons followed, including 2 All-Star awards. Domingo Caudillo was the link between both eras, and is the all-time team leader in Innings Pitched, Games Started, and Complete Games. The final slot goes to Vargas, who only played in Philly 3 seasons, but was the staff ace during their championship run, posting 2 20 win seasons, 2 All-Stars, and 2 seasons with an ERA under 3.

    Relief Pitchers Top 3

    Lawrence Dockery Seasons 2029-2037

    234 0 26 18 117 2.74 269.0 223 91 82 29 50 343 13 0 0 1.01

    James Maddocks Seasons 2033-2036
    206 0 14 16 36 2.83 318.3 253 109 100 32 70 230 41 0 0 1.01

    Francesco Ortiz Seasons 2012-2019
    496 0 37 37 130 3.82 622.7 478 281 264 0 238 539 0 0 0 1.15

The Billyclubs/Red Stripe have had some pockets of solid relief, but the ones that have logged in the most minutes and saves were in the middle-of-the-pack. The all-time save leader is Mario Gaines, but he leads with only 151 and has a balloon ERA of 4.52. So I picked these three. Dockery and Maddocks by far lead the pack. Despite pitching less that 400 innings each, they have ERA's in the 2's. Dockery has 117 saves. Ortiz is an old veteran, more solid that Gaines.

I have a feeling that in 10 seasons, with the exception of the big boys like Maestas, James, and Vargas, the all-time list will be littered with current Red Stripe players. They've won 121 and 122 games in 2043 and 2044 and are young and deep. I do think that CJP deserves a lot of credit for some good managing, as the talent level overall was less than the Greenbelt's and Wisconsin's, yet they're 500 games over .500 lifetime. With Doc manning the controls now, that will go up. Way up. Dig it, mon!

Franchise #5 to be selected soon.

Great stuff, Rope! It's cool learning about our franchise's all-time greats.
I'm thinking in another 5 years or so, we'll be adding 2B Ruben Sanchez, C Marlon Weems and 3B Al Petty to the list, as well as Aldis, McClendon and Ritchie.

    Dola

As an interesting aside, I re-signed Villegas in 2041.
He put up good numbers and a winning record for an improving-but-horrible team, and came "this close" to being traded to Hollywood that season.

A Raymond "The Douchebag" Horowitz reference! That actually makes me kinda nauseous. God, I still hate that fucker, probably more even than I hate Paco Diaz. But Roger "Pig" Landin still holds the title for most punchable face in B-Clubs history.

Man, this makes me feel really tight in the diapers. Nice move of making Vern-O the DH, too. Great work f'rope. And I gotta hand it to Doc P for doing a fantastic job with the franchise. Now, I can't wait for a chance to shoe him square in the nuts in the SS!
