Default Discussion - processing trades before Opening Day

Per this thread, there is a request to process trades before Opening Day.

As with the other discussion topic, I don't believe this requires an amendment vote, but I wanted to get the league's thoughts. We don't process trades before the sim for good reason... I don't want the extra work of slotting new players into a team's lineup.

But I think it's reasonable to make a once-per-season exception prior to Opening Day. I'm willing to process a trade before the sim (upon request) and make changes to a lineup, within reason.

    Thoughts?

The PTB are the ones doing all the work, so I'm happy to agree with whatever their opinion is. If they don't think it would be too much work, it'd be nice.

Once upon a time -- back when we enforced the Opening Day OC check -- we specifically had a "sim" day after ST but before Opening Day, specifically for FA signings and trade processing, in case anybody needed to make last-minute moves to fill out the roster and/or shed salary. I don't see why there couldn't/shouldn't be a pre-opening day import just for that purpose.

Of course, once that "sim" was run, you're still SOL until after the OD sim.

I like the idea of being able to process trades before the opening day sim - not sure we need an extra day to get that done.

If you don't get specific enough instructions, then you don't pull the trigger.

Also - should be on a trial basis. Can' see more than 2-3 of these per year, but if there are more then you can re-assess.

I'd opt for an extra file, but that's just me. I would base it on whatever is less work - publishing an extra file, or dealing with instructions (yes, this may vary season to season).

Edit: also, only for opening day.

I'd prefer scheduling an extra pre-opening day sim like the one Simms describes instead of an ad hoc trade rule for one sim. Additionally (or instead) it might be wise to schedule some extra off days during ST to allow time for more pre-season trades. The post-RFA file is the first time we are completely certain about our rosters & finances and it seems to me there could be a lot more deals happening at that time if that time period was extended a bit.

The other good thing about adding an extra file day between ST and Opening Day is that as long as you don't advance the date in-game, people who *don't* make additional moves can still export from the earlier one. Not everybody has to keep pace with the additional file, and owners would be free to export from either one without penalty.

Then that seems like the best option.
