Default Mock Draft returns, 2043 edition!

My close personal acquaintance Jim Niginowitz finally emailed me back almost a year after I asked him for another Mock Draft feature. Turns out he got stuck in his hyperbaric chamber, which just so happens to be in his mother's basement. Weird.

His preliminary comments: "Shaw, I knew the FOBL went through a talent drought, but Jesus Christ, did OOTP13 add a "Steroids: Very High" modifier? Good thing you kept that 1st and 2nd rounder, huh? Fuckhead. At least you got some value for it. What's DES' excuse? Five million bucks? UTI should flip that pick for $10 million on principle and belly-flop into it Scrooge McDuck-style."

Anyhoo, here's how he sees this draft shaking out.

1-1 Arizona Discotheques - I was going to say pitching was a no-brainer here, because they have a bunch of "meh" in their system, but they only have 2 legitimate hitting prospects, both young OF. I think they have to add a big infield bat here, and 1B Doug "Boomer" Davis is the smart pick, despite having the work ethic of an asthmatic Frenchman.

    {snark} An aside... good thing they got a long close look at what P Doug Rogers was capable of. He was dominant during his 0.2 IP of major league action. That's what the callup exemption is for right there! {/snark and kisses}

1-2 Marlboro Townies - DC is a savvy bastard. Three straight playoff appearances, then a tank year resulting in 2 1st rounders during the best draft class in history. Too bad they don't have 5 straight picks here, because that's what they need. It would appear that SP Theron Wilkinson is the easy pick here, but I think beta tester DC gets scared off by Wilkinson's Tyrion Lannister-esque stature and takes masher LF Julian "Wonder Boy" Castillo (New OOTP v13 feature: super-shitty nicknames, and more of them!)

1-3 Wisconsin Snowbirds - WIS is picking 3rd? And it's their pick, not some lubricant-free-rape victim's? Wow. I have been gone a while. Bruno has to take SP Theron Wilkinson. He could be his #1 SP right now.

1-4 Utica Wombats - Holy shit, what an embarrassment of riches pitching prospect-wise. Unless v13 kills them all, UTI will have the most dominant staff in FOBL very soon. As a result, Nick goes for a big stick here (as he does most every night, from what I hear). LF Shawn "Sniper" Lewis gives UTI an older, more-ready prospect to pair with his older pitching prospects. Lewis compensates for his macular degeneration with an impressive work ethic and moderately cool nickname.

1-5 Utica Wombats (from Des Moines) - What a windfall for UTI. I think the best move is trading this pick and acquiring some extra picks given the depth of power hitters in this draft, but I can't fault Nick if he stands pat. Assuming he does, I think he goes with another hitter, but a young one. 2B Jerry Davis would be a brave pick, but Nick loves those big sticks and he takes SHB 1B Raúl Lara.

1-6 Virginia Woodchucks - VIR's aversion to drafting pitchers is well-known, but he has plenty of hitters ready to pounce. Buddy G is sitting right behind him, praying Subby gets cold feet on taking 4-pitch flamethrower SP Pete Michaels, but Subby breaks Buddy's heart and Michaels is a Woodchuck. Your foil-covered shower shoes are in your locker, rook.

1-7 Capital City Metropolitans - It's strange seeing CAP picking this high for so many seasons. But it's working out for Buddy, I guess, because his "Top Prospects" list is fucking insane. They don't even need this pick. They should trade it to HOL for a few million bucks and the crumbs at the bottom of a Pringles can. If that punk-rock fool doesn't see the wisdom in that, then he takes the SP consolation prize SP Artie Davis.

1-8 Montego Bay Red Stripe - DocP has a tough choice here. The clearly-best SP and hitters are off the board, but Doc really doesn't need pitching either, because they're loaded. I think MBJ is a potential trade partner for UTI at 1-5. If DocP could slide into that spot and grab 1B Raúl Lara, I think they do it. Barring that, they take the next-best thing, 1B Ewan Kirbishly.

1-9 Wichita Tumbleweeds - WIC's system is in rough shape. No power, no contact aside from C Kinney, and no real pitching to speak of other than Brit Miller. WIC is also averse to taking teenage SP, but I don't think they can go wrong with taking the BHA here, who is the versatile 3B Pepe Peña.

1-10 Utah Raptors - Allo desperately needs a power hitter here, but I think he decides to pounce on one of the undervalued young SP and hopes that a solid hitter is available in the 2nd round, or that he can swing a trade to acquire another 1st rounder. The awful 3rd pitch and nickname aren't enough to scare him off of SP Don "Pinocchio" Cooper.

    Continuing...

1-11 Boston Pagans - Drake was doing so well. A few playoff appearances, some nice young players, but then he lost his mojo and missed the playoffs in a down year for the Skates division. Having the 11th pick in a loaded draft is a decent consolation prize, but Drake wants to win now. I wouldn't be surprised if he trades this pick for a legitimate superstar, but if he keeps it, I think he goes with the most big-league-ready prospect at a position of need, and that would be C Brad MacNamara.

1-12 Richmond Confederates - I think Cubs sees the value left at this point being in a SP. When is the next draft where you can get a #1 SP at 1-12? Tough call between SP Yoshihisa Yamauchi and SP Aidan MacCall. Ultimately I think Yamauchi's miserable 3rd pitch makes Cubs go with MacCall.

1-13 Las Vegas Lightning - Cuervo is nothing if not a risk-taker (and a pyromaniac who collects vintage Ken dolls, which makes sense if you think about it), so I think we get our first real curveball of the draft here. Eyebrows are raised (even Shaw's) when C takes SS/SP Clive Ellacott. "But he's not even the best infielder left," you say. True... but he may be the best SP left. 10/8/8 with a sick 71% GB/FB ratio. Cuervo gets the best of both worlds here. He might have been able to trade down and get him, but Cuervo values certainty. And a good set of matches.

1-14 Greenbelt Gophers - We continue the run on SP at this pick, as Critch goes with either SP Yoshihisa Yamauchi or SP Aidan MacCall, whoever is left.

1-15 Queens Bees - Ramz hasn't exported since 2029, so this will probably be an OTTO pick (j/k Ramzie). At this point in most drafts, owners are looking at RP>SP and slick glovemen. In this draft, there are still "sure things" available, so Ramz doesn't have to stretch for value. When you get a chance to take an 8 CON/10 POW guy at 1-15, you jump on it despite his defensive shortcomings: 1B Duane Tanner.

1-16 Norwich Mustardmen - A complete lack of power in the NRW system keeps hitters in the spotlight. The most complete value at this point looks to be 2B Jerry Davis. He's got speed, defense, contact and enough power to make him the 2nd best NRW prospect in that regard.

1-17 Triangle Vajdas - Vaj is disappointed because he wanted Davis, but is consoled with a good need pick, taking the most complete C left on the board: C Toby Briggs.

1-18 Poughkeepsie Paladins - Poor Thomkal. Does it matter who he takes? We'll complete this exercise for shits and giggles. Looking at the POU system, they invested heavily in RP>SP types, who will likely get killed in v13. As a result, POU would like to take advantage of the depth in this draft by grabbing a "real" SP. I think of all the teams, POU would benefit the most by making a brave move to trade up, because there isn't a sure thing SP left here. The closest thing is SP Wes Russell, who in any other draft would be a top-10 pick.

1-19 Durham Dragons - DUR desperately needs a middle infielder in their system, so Mali will be deciding between 2B Pepe Dias and 2B Jared Clark here. Dias is older and has more power, but less defense. Clark is young, but an OBP machine with the work ethic/intelligence combination of a Jamaican immigrant who also happens to be a chess grandmaster. I think Clark has the higher ceiling, so I'll go with him at this pick.

1-20 Alaska Albatross - Word on the street behind my house (where I score my rocks, beeyatch) is that Argot will "match any offer up to a billion dollars" in FA for SP Juan Carlos Rivera. That's a good thing, because there is no Rivera left in the draft pool here. ALK may have the fewest power hitters in their system of any FOBL team, so they need to take advantage of the deep hitter draft and rectify that here. 3B Willie Ross is super-young, but will hit 50+ dongs with a .380+ OBP if he survives the dev gauntlet. Worth the risk at 1-20.

    Part 3 to come...

    The final installment....

1-21 Columbus Crows - Not a lot of hitters in the COL system, so Crow grabs tremendous value for the 21st overall pick by selecting CF Micah Kelly.

1-22 Portland Fighting Prawns - POR looks to be in decent shape as far as hitting prospects go, which makes the decision to take SP Mitch Bass more palatable.

1-23 Milwaukee Microbrewers - There are other catchers on the board with a better mix of CON and POW, but C Cisco Liñares is a well-developed SHB C with solid defense who will flirt with hitting .400, and he's too much to pass up.

1-24 Orono Pocket Otters - Is Digamma still in the league? He's been trying to leave since 2010. Good thing he stuck around, because getting a player like 2B Pepe Dias at 1-24 is worth sticking around for.

1-25 Barstow Brouhaha - Behind C Mal Hamm, DD doesn't have a lot of position player talent in his system, so he eschews the remaining pitchers for rocket-armed 3B Loren Simmons. Simmons would be a great value at this point, but whether he slips this far is in question.

1-26 Santa Cruz Sea Lions - SAC would grab Simmons in a hummingbird's heartbeat if he's still here, but he won't be. Clint made his FOBL bones with stud SP, and he'll grab the last quality SP on the board by this point, SP Derrek Roberts.

1-27 Trenton Roadkill - PBot has a decent pool of SP prospects, so he can turn to a position of need. There are several solid INF and OF left, but it's almost impossible to find a C with 7/8/7 talents at the bottom of the 1st round. C Brad Walker comes off the board here despite his defensive limitations.

1-28 Ayr Stunt Monkeys - AYR had the best pitching in the GL last season, but the cupboard is a bit bare. Usually by this point in the draft, at least a few RP have been taken, but Ryan will be the first to break the RP seal this year by taking RP Manny "Woody" Castillo, the most dominant and ready RP in the pool.

1-29 Arizona Discotheques (from Hollywood) - ARZ took a hitter at 1-1, and they have a wraparound pick shortly, so Rope rolls the dice with SP Theo Aynsley. The only reason he would still be available is his youth (17), but if Rope can pull this off, some of the sting of trading Ruben Vasquez may be eased.

1-30 Montego Bay Red Stripe (from Montana) - Aynsley would be the obvious pick here with MBJ's second 1st rounder, but no way he drops past Rope. MBJ is OK with that, though, because they have tons of young pitching. They go with 3B Zak Hurlburt, a potential OBP machine who has the raw athletic ability to be a gold-glove SS.

1-31 Marlboro Townies (from Davenport) - I can see DC wheeling and dealing this pick and some others to move up in the 1st round, but 3B Duane Warren won't get past him if he picks here. Warren is limited defensively, but DC will find a place for his 8/8/6 talents.

1-32 Indianapolis Ice Weasels - The amount of talent left for Kurt here is shocking, so he really can't go wrong. A likely player remaining here worth the pick is RF Willie Tyler.

So I'm so glad this Jim Niginowitz is back doing the mock draft. Ask him though why I should try to trade up for a better pitching prospect if it doesn't really matter who I get here? I don't think my RP or is it SP types are going to be too bad off after the move, but I would like to get a more "typical" SP prospect or two. But have you seen my OF man? It's pretty barren of prospects and major league talent especially if Reece "I wasn't worth anywhere near 10 million dollars" Kivlochan doesn't come back to the fold.

But fun stuff though, thanks for doing it you attention whore.

Yikes... Jim missed on Mitch Bass big-time.

In his defense, he did not have injury ratings in front of him when making the list.

I didn't even peek at the LAS entry until now (heck, I hardly peeked at the draft class until now). Nice job, Shawstrodamus.

Ellacott was a really solid pick at 1.13, and I think his value as a switchie INF will be greater than his potential as a SP. Nice to have a fall-back role though regardless.

Quite possibly, though that error rating doesn't thrill me.

Maybe now that I have him I can turn last year's 1.5 Julian Rubio back into a pitcher.

    (nah, probably not)
