So you'd be in favor of at least 3 automatic bids from each division?
Is this something we'll vote on once we determine # of teams in the playoffs?

I'd personally rather see 2 or less auto-bids from each division, then pick wild cards by record.

Wolvie, I'd still want to have the GL and VL only meet in the SS. I'd have the first round seeded cross-division within the same leage, and then the survivors battle to the appropriate CS.

Yeah, this is the real problem with divisional playoff situations.

For what it's worth, I'd favor division champs only and then 4 wild cards. Division pride is cute and all, but it'd be a lot more fun to see a dogfight and it would make games across divisions matter more, etc.

But if everyone wants this divisional business, then I'd say top two in each division and then make the last two berths in each league wild card spots rather than by division.

I think a problem exists where if we have an unbalanced schedule where we play more against our division it could affect who gets in. Say we have 2 teams, one against a division that is mostly tanking and another where the team is mostly competing. They both have similar records but say team 2 has a slightly worse one, 2 games back. I don't know if its fair to say that team 1 should get in just because they have a better record and team 2 is locked out because they played a harder schedule. I think it would be fairer to keep it the way it is now.

It does work the other way as well but at least with the unbalanced schedule, you earn your way in. If you go with a balanced schedule with in say the GL, then you might as well just do away with the divisions.

Here's why I like our current playoff format:
    - The tipping point between a tanking/lost season and believing your team is still in the race is close for most teams and for most of the season. That should be good for owner morale/activity, it should be an encouragement for trading, and it should discourage tanking.
    - The symmetry is nice. 4 teams from 4 divisions, and just glance at the standings from across the room and you know you're good if you see your team in the top 50% group.

Here's why I dislike our current playoff format:
    - Not as bad but still close enough to the NHL format to lessen the value of the regular season. In the NHL more than 50% of the teams make the playoffs.
    - When my 125-37 juggernaut team gets beat by a 80-82 4th place team in round 1 I'm going to be a real whiny bitch about it.
    - As a baseball traditionalist I believe that only the top 1 team in the National (Gindin) & American (Vaughan) leagues should make the playoffs. Also I think night games should be disallowed, the home team broadcaster should have to bat, and that there should be completely separate leagues for people of different skin colors (pretty sure there is a bible verse about this actually). Also, the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap.

This is one of the reasons why I really don't care about tanking at all at this point. Tauter gets a team again and wants to shoot for 3-159? No problem - the impact on the respective playoff chases is going to be the same all around - 14 wins (most likely) to each of the teams in his own division, 6 wins for those in the other division within the league. You also don't need to worry about seeding, or if the SAC 90 win season is better or worse than the HOL 90 win season (it was better, the Skates stunk ).

Also, all of this. There's a balance to be struck between having enough teams in the hunt throughout the season and not watering down the playoff pool. I'm not convinced that 8 teams is the right point.

Ok, not all of it. I've never read any Sontag.

Exactly. It does matter if the schedule is unbalanced and wild cards are determined by wins. That would give HOL 8 extra wins over SAC and if SAC is 2 games back, he gets the shaft for not have Tauter in his division.

I think my point is that, yeah this year I did lose out, I would have gotten into this year's playoffs if the playoffs had wild card teams. But it doesn't bother me nearly as much as not getting in because my team had a worse record than another team who had the benefit of playing someone else that was tanking.

Buddy and Cuervo summed up my thoughts exactly. As much as I hated having to decide at the trade deadline whether we were in or out, it was a lot more fun being in position to have to think about it. Under a six team playoff, there was no question - I was out, by a long shot.

I still wish I could get people on board for playoffs set up between divisions, instead of within divisions, but I know that's not going to happen. Though even with a six team that could work - division winners get byes, 2 from one division plays 3 from the other, and then the division winner with the higher record gets the remaining wild card with the lower record....

I think intra-division playoffs are a bit silly. You play all year with each other and it waters down winning the regular season division title. Post-season isn't for rivalries, it's for competition and the NHL (post-1993) has it right, though I want to bring back the Prince of Wales and Campbell Conferences Sun Belt hockey fans be damned.

Anyway...I think that six teams with wild cards outside of the top two spots in each division (so basically the 3rd place teams play for wild cards with the possibility of a strong 4th place team winning out) works. Gives you the best of both worlds. I'm obviously fine with more teams in the playoffs, because in a slowsie league where the seasons are like years, it's nice to give people a reason to pay attention. But I think there needs to be some merit for having done well all year and going 82-80 doesn't quite cut it even in my equality minded heart.

Also, someone mentioned a best-of-9 game SS and I tend to support this. It works nicely.

FWIW, I tuned the NHL out near completely when it did all that realignment/restructuring junk. A PHI/CAR or a PHI/FLA series pales compared to PHI/NJ, PHI/NYR, PHI/PIT (and back then, PHI/WAS. Now that they're no longer in the division, meh.)

NJ/PHI NJ/NYR still happens though. Just not in the first round. Which makes sense when you have to give 1-2-3 top seeds to division champs.

I guess I'll redo this poll, then, or people who would like to change their vote may indicate below. Clint has switched, so now we need 3 more flip-flippers to get to 6 teams per league.
