Default FROM WORST TO FIRST -- TOWNIES WIN A DIVISION TITLE

MARLBORO, VERMONT (AP) - The biggest single-season turnaround in FOBL history is complete.

Two season ago, the Marlboro Townies were languishing in San Francisco as the San Francisco Lovely Ladies. They'd just lost 136 games, coming within 5 games of the 144 losses set by Indianapolis back in 2014. Two years later, the club once known as the Bantam Originals - a true FOBL doormat - are wearing the crown as champions for only the second time in the moribund franchise's history.

Here are some of the previous teams that went from terribad to division champs in one year:

    Code:
2001-02 Queens Bees (66 wins to 92 wins)
2015-16 Indianapolis Ice Weasels (79 wins to 110 wins)
2015-16 Montana Monarchs (72 wins to 104 wins)
2030-31 Capital City Mets (67 wins to 99 wins)
2038-39 Marlboro Townies (51 wins to 90 wins)
However, no team in history had ever previously finished last in their division and returned the following season to finish first until now. Just kidding. While the Townies split the season series with Montana, they won the season series against Milwaukee (9-5) and Barstow (8-6). The team knows they can't relax, that the real season is here.

"We had it as our goal to get here all year. No one believed in us. They said we weren't ready. Weren't good enough and didn't have the talent. Well, they're believin' in us now baby. We're champions. And we're not done yet," said veteran Simon Farr, one of the few players left on the roster who played with the Bantam Originals iteration of this journeyman franchise.

"Ownership committed to us, got us the pieces we needed and look at us now, man. Look at us now," said 36-year old 1B Charles Helfer who joined the team at the trade deadline. "I knew the minute I walked into this place, there was something different. I'm just glad we were able to put it all together. We've got more work to do, but this feels good. Real good for our fans and for us."

Great stuff and a great result, DC. While that INDTank was indeed incredibad, you've overlooked the most miraculously awful team in FOBL history - the 2017 Minnesota Windchill: http://reference.thefobl.com/fbr/teams/min/2017.html

I still love the fact that they were expected to win 8 games and managed to win only half of them.

I was only focusing on bad teams that won division titles the following year. There's no way I overlooked them. They did go from 4 to 24 to 71 (+47) in three years. But they didn't win their division, so I didn't include them in the "worst teams to win their division title" list.

Look at meeeeeee. This is about meeeee...

Not to diminish the accomplishment, but Utica managed the feat 2012 - 2013.
    2012: 64-98, 6th Place (Last) 33 games out
    2013: 86-76, 1st Place

The 6th place year was the only season out of a 13 year stretch in which they didn't finish 1st or 2nd which was a great run. Now...LOL@UTI

I knew someone would find another team. I did a really rough assessment. Good stuff.

Actually, we both missed one. A very big one.

    2037: 70-92, 8th Place (Last), 29 games out.
2038: 95-67, 1st Place. League Champions, the Greenbelt Gophers.

Can it happen in back to back seasons?

Oh wow, yeah that's a biggin. I think the 70 wins probably threw me off. I was looking for more craptastic teams.
