Default Machuca Helps Nukes Celebrate Twentieth

Los Alamos -- It was twenty years ago today that Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play, but perhaps even more important to those in NukeTown was the fact that the FOBL came to town. The 2035 season will mark the 20th year since RonCo took over a struggling franchise that was located in the sleepy town of Essex, and moved them across the country to the arid desert of New Mexico. The city refurbished an old ballistic testing site to create RJ Oppenheimer Field, known lovingly as the Crater, and RonCo stepped up to the podium and made Alex Machuca the team's first-ever draft pick.

The circle will come closed on Opening Day 2035, as Machuca will be honored with enshrinement into the team's Silo of Honor. The all-star center fielder struggled to make it to the majors, but once he got there he became on of the steady cornerstones of the franchise. He roamed the outfield from 2022-2031, a period that resulted in three division titles, four wild card births, and two SS championships. He finished his career with a pair of inauspicious seasons with Queens before hanging them up at the end of last season.

Machuca was a 30/100 man for most of his prime, and generally added 50 steals to those numbers. His 79% SB% was a silent killer and made him a fan favorite. "No one was a better baserunner than Alex," said fellow Silo member Lewis Hubbell. "He was an artist taking his lead."

Machuca credits catching the last out of the 2029 series as the highlight of his career. "I was lucky to join a hungry organization at a time when a lot of great ball players were coming through," he said over the phone. "It was a privilege to play with those guys, and the fans were outstanding. I'll always be a Nuke at heart."

The team is rebounding from a tough 2034 that saw them choke up a hair-ball in the last six weeks of the season to finish second to the Capital City Metropolitans. RonCo has opened the checkbook to bouy the hearts of the Nuke faithful, however, and with the league's Free Agency process still in process he's landed a pair of big fish in closer Daniel Savino (1 year, 2.1 Mill), and of course returning long-time Nuke legend Kyle Faller to the city where he belongs.

"It'll be great to see Alex again," Faller said. "Hopefully it'll be just like old times."

Precisely, except when he made it in Wichita and Capital City.

    Now you're just funnin'.

Saying Faller belongs in Wichita is like saying Lou Brock belongs in Chicago (or Ozzie Smith belongs in San Diego, for that matter). Capital City was unable to turn Faller's presence into a ring.

And none of this has anything to do with the fact that Alex Machuca was a great Nuke.

Capital City did allow Faller's presence to beat down Los Alamos for three straight seasons.

    This is fun.

He did all he could that's for sure, a true one man team who single handedly (and overnight) turned the 67-95 2031 team into DT winners every season he was with them. The team was unofficially called the Kyle Faller Mets during his years in Capital City. They made it to the SS in 1 of the 2 post-seasons he pitched, and quite possibly would have made big noise if not for his SEI last year. Speaking about the SEI last year, that is why we did not bid above the QO on him. Obviously at least 2 teams were still gunning for him, and I would not be surprised if all the teams bidding were from the DT.

Oh, and grats to Alex Machuca!
