Default Congratulations to our New Owners

I am pleased to announce that the FOBL Ownership has voted in three new (well, one previously used) owners. They are:

    KWhit - Seminole Honkies
    Draft Dodger - Montana Monarchs
    NoMyths - Trenton Roadkill

These owners take the reigns immediately, and have a chance to enter or modify their new teams' QO's and should be prepared to take place in the BWD process on Tuesday (Monday for setting reserve prices).

The new owners should also read and ratify the FOBL Constitution (also, any owners past Bruno should as well).

Simms will set each of you up with permissions to the Owners Lounge later today. I make db edits to allow you access to the draft utility. The draft will hopefully start later today.

Each of you will have the chance before the start of the season to a) move/rename your franchise and b) adjust your home park settings, at no charge.

If you have any questions, let Simms, Mali or myself know either by posting here, contacting us by PM or in the lounge. Again, congratulations and welcome to the FOBL!

    a couple q's - are the rules/restrictions about moving/renaming the franchises?

am I right that the deadline for submitting QOs is today?

and can someone walk me through how that bidding system works?

You can move/name the team to whatever/wherever you want. You can make one-time adjustments your park factors prior to Opening Day of this season. Future changes (once only 3 years only) will cost you $2.1 mil.

QOs are technically due today, yes, but if you need an extra day, I don't think it'll hurt anything, as the auction db won't be loaded until Monday probably.

I'll expand on the bidding system in a separate post.

    1. I don't think there are any

    2. Technically yes (now that FA is moved up from my dates...), though QO/not QO is something that Daimyo can probably change on his end in the db fairly easily after I send him the data file. I don't know what Daimyo's schedule looks like, it may well be that he can't have the "reserve" period ready for Monday, in which case we would roll things back a day on BWD.

    3. BWD - think eBay. All guys who are QO'd have an initial bid set in the db, which is the amount of the QO (75% of last year's salary or 1M, whichever is larger). So if you QO Eldridge Oshea for 1 year, at the start of BWD you would have an opening bid of $6.75M/1yr. Now, there is a lead in of a day where you can go in and ajust bids on just your QO'd players - allowing you to increase that initial bid and essentially set a reserve price. So you could go in and increase your bid to $8M/1. His actual tag would still be $6.75M. When the general BWD phase starts, another team could put in a bid on him, say for $7M/1yr. That bid would not break your reserve, so you would still lead, however the contract price will have been bumped to $7M.

There is also the matter of different lengths of contracts and the "sweet spot" - basically, you get the best deal on a player if you bid 3 years. So someone could come in and bid $5.5M/3, and even though it is less yearly, it would be deemed a stronger bid than $6.75/1. Those values are listed in the system when you go to place a bid - it will let you know what the minimum bid is for each contract length.

ok, so contract length is variable? my QO could be for 4 years, but someone else can come and do a one year bid and, if it's high enough, get the player?

In theory yes, they could. It would have to be at a higher salary though. Basically the sweet spot is at 3 years, 2 year contracts = 4 year contracts as far as "attractiveness" (to the player) goes, and 1yr = 5yr.

at any rate, I should have QOs tonight or maybe tomorrow at the latest. I have a pretty decent idea about what I want to do already

The earlier you get me the QO data, the better the chance reserve setting will start Monday morning. I think at a minimum I'll need it Sunday afternoon to make that happen. In the past reserve setting has always started late I think and even if you get me the file Monday morning I should be able to get it up by 1pm CST at the latest.

If you want to get me the QOs now for everyone but the three new owners I could certainly import their's later as you get it.

The whole world is a circus if you look at it the right way. Every time you pick up a handful of dust, and see not the dust, but a mystery, a marvel, there in your hand, every time you stop and think, "I'm alive, and being alive is fantastic!" Every time such a thing happens, you are part of the Circus of Dr. Lao.

    Ok, the basics are this.

FOBL has two rounds of free agency, BWD (Bid With Discounts, formerly Restricted FA) and UFA (unrestricted). If you give a player a qualifying offer, you are committing to offering him at least 1M or 75% of his current contract, whichever is higher. This entitles you to apply "loyalty" discounts to the player should you win him back in FA. The loyalty discounts are 5% of final bid salary for minimal, 10% for average, and 20% for loyal. Also, you can get a "hometown" discount of 5% if the player has only ever played in the majors for your franchise (you can take a look at your FA's in last year's HTML salary report - http://reference.thefobl.com/2021/team28sa.html . Anyone who just had their 5th year in the majors, or guys on expiring contracts). In addition to *that*, you can take legacy discounts on players who have been on your team for over 5 years, to the tune of 2% for each season from the 6th on (for reference, VIR's Antonio Ohl gets rediculous discounts, AND is never bid highly enough because we all know we can't outbid Subby on him).

Anyway, giving the QO is stating that you think the guy is worth the QO offer and the discount you would be getting. Any 5th year FA worth much over average usually warrants a QO. If they are perfectly pedestrian (Wilfredo Aybar for instance), probably not.

Guys who go to UFA start with the league minimum $100k, and are bid up from there. This is the place for guys with inflated salaries, or guys who just aren't worth $1M. Or occasionally guys who were on ok contracts, but for whatever reason (player valuations, market conditions) might slip through, giving you a bargain. It does happen sometimes.
